Food Chains and Food Web Modules

We have written a brief and accessible introduction to Food Chains and Food Web Modules, which discusses typical ways in which ecologists simplify and deconstruct food webs. We briefly review modular theory, focusing on two ubiquitous modules – the food chain and the diamond module – before discussing how results from modular theory contribute to a theory for whole systems.

It is published as an entry in the Encyclopedia of Theoretical Ecology (2012), co-authored with Kevin McCann, and is available from University of California Press here.
